ornamentations series 1, 2, 3 & 4, 2019. Wood embroidery hoop, washi paper, graphite, gold thread, glass beads. 18cm diameter.
In search of insights into concepts of regeneration in Japan, I documented moss, lichen, and vines that grow on and around sacred spaces. These organic accents are expressions of the relationship between sacred object and turbulent environment. They are a record of the passage of time: change, growth, decomposition, and transformation. What can I learn from these plants that grow without differentiating between sacred rocks and stone steps? Paper and graphite are used to make rubbings off of shrine surfaces. This same paper is embroidered with decorative designs inspired by the plants' growth patterns. These works are a meditation on the persistence and slow progress of the plants and fungi in relation to repetitious spiritual practice.
